NTN police test study guide, by section
FrontLine National tests judgment, observation and reading, not police knowledge, so studying means rehearsing three skills under time pressure. Below: what each section rewards, a note template for the report, and a plan for the weeks before your session.

What you are studying for
The test owner's description is clear that no law enforcement experience is needed. Video answers rest on the scene and common sense, the report on what you saw, the blanks on words from training material. That makes preparation about habits, not facts. How many questions? Not published by NTN, so plan by section. Take the practice test cold first and let the weakest chip set your order.
Human relations (video): pick the professional move
Prepare a habit, not a list of rules: answer from the scene only, since the test tells you to use the information given and common sense. A short order of checks (safety first, then calm and respect, then follow-through inside the officer's role) and the wrong-answer patterns to avoid are worked through on the human relations page, next to its practice scenes.
No pause on the video
Video items play without stopping, with about 10 seconds per answer (NTN). Practice deciding on one read: answer first, then check the explanation.
Report writing: your notes decide part two
Before the test scene, you are shown a sample situation and an example report. Study it: it shows what the graders count as a good response. Then the scene plays twice.
- First viewing: the sequence. Who arrived, who did what, in what order.
- Second viewing: the exact details. Times, addresses, plate letters, amounts, clothing, which way someone went.
- Note template: Time · Place · People (name, age, description) · Events in order · Numbers · Property · Injuries.
- Write facts, not opinions: "the man shouted and pointed at the clerk," not "the man was angry."
Part two asks multiple-choice questions you answer from your own report, so anything you skipped is gone. Portland calls this part a written language ability test, so clean sentences matter too. Drills: report writing.
Reading: let the sentence choose the word
- Read the whole sentence, and the one after it, before looking at the options.
- Say a word of your own for the blank, then find the option closest to it.
- Check the fit: part of speech, subject-verb agreement ("Neither of the witnesses was"), and whether the meaning matches the job described.
Passages come from police training material, so learn the plain working vocabulary of the job: custody, compliance, perimeter, statement. Drills: reading.
A plan for the weeks before
- Baseline: the practice test, untimed, all three chips.
- Weakest section first: its page, then the practice test again.
- Report rehearsal: play any short news or training clip twice, take notes with the template, write the report against a timer, then quiz yourself on five details.
- Official video practice, if you buy it: NTN suggests using it at least a week before your test date (practice tests page).
- Online parts: finish the PSSA and history questionnaire early; departments receive them automatically (what the PSSA is).
Test day
- Bring a valid government photo ID with the same name as your account.
- At a center, arrive 30 minutes early; late arrivals may be turned away.
- From home, test the computer and room set-up before the day; the virtual testing FAQ lists the rules.
- If you also booked the physical test, leave time between the two (PAT).

NTN study guide, quick answers
How do I study for the NTN police test?
By section. Drill judgment scenes with a safety, calm, follow-through check; practice taking notes on a scene you watch twice; and read fill-in-the-blank passages sentence first, options second.
Do I need police knowledge for the NTN test?
No. NTN says the video test is not a test of policy or technical knowledge, and that answers should rest only on what the test shows and common sense.
Are the Ergometrics practice tests worth buying?
They are the developer's own video practice, and each purchase allows two passes. NTN calls them helpful but not necessary. If video pacing worries you, they let you rehearse it on real video items.
How long should I study for the NTN test?
No official figure exists. NTN only suggests finishing its practice tests at least a week before the test date. Plan by your weakest section on a baseline practice test.
